The current trend in museum design, otherwise known as "the Bilbao effect", is that of a museum as a destination spot and therefore an economic stimulant to its region. Many argue that this has had a negative effect on the display of art and its importance within the museum. These individuals would argue for more of a traditional display of art, what many consider "the white box." This museum and its site would serve multiple purposes thus allowing for the creation of a destination spot and at the same time provide the setting for a more traditional approach to the display of art.
The existing site consists of boat ramp and a park. These uses will remain and will be supplemented by 50,000 S.F. of new museum program and additional programs such as restaurants and shops. Through the integration of live video feeds of the museum, onto large exterior screens, the museum will share its content and its activity with the city.
